There is a moment in professional life that is hardly a crisis, but even harder to call stability. Your old role seems to be tight, like clothes that have long outgrown you. And the new one has no shape yet - just a feeling that there is something more yours somewhere ahead.
It is a state of inner «between». And although it is often frightening, it is not actually a failure. It is an invitation.
What is a “transition boundary”?”
«The »transition line« is the period when old professional strategies stop working and new ones are not yet defined. There is no clear answer here, but there is a very important process - rethinking This is not a moment when »everything falls apart". It is a moment when A new identity is born.
Signs that you are in this state
- The work has stopped developing, even if the results remain high.
- There is a feeling that I have changed, but the role has not.
- What used to be a source of inspiration has become a routine.
- There is a desire for change, but without clarity on what kind of change.
- A slight internal resistance: I don't want to stay, but I don't know where to go.
- It feels like you're on the threshold of a new stage - but you can't see the door yet.
If you recognise yourself, it's absolutely normal. This is how professional evolution begins.
Why is this happening?
Professional identity is changing in waves. We grow faster than our responsibilities, positions and role titles. What was once a «dream» may no longer make sense because we are different. This is the moment when the inner potential is moving forward, and logic has not yet caught up.
The key truth: A career transition is not a leap into the unknown. It is a transition to a new level of awareness.
How does coaching help?
In this state, people usually do not need someone to «tell them what to do». What they need is space for clarification.
The coach's job here is not to direct, but to reflect and help you see yourself more clearly.
Coaching:
- enables you to see patterns in your own professional path
- helps to formulate a new identity: «Who am I now?»
- clarifies true desires, not social expectations
- opens up access to what has long been wanting to manifest
- Transforms confusion into clarity
- helps to create a vision and transition plan - not as a survival strategy, but as a way of development
Transition does not start with a resume. It starts with a dialogue with yourself.
Two short stories
Story 1: «I don't know what I want»
A client came in with a phrase: «I've lost track of what I like.» At the third session, she said: «It turns out that I know very well what I want. I was just afraid to voice it». Thus, the new role began to be formed not from logic, but from honesty.
Story 2: About an internal change that is not visible from the outside
A client said: «The leadership role is exhausting, but it's a “necessary” step.» In the process, it became clear that his strength was not in managing, but in creating. When he allowed himself to stop pulling on a role that wasn't his, he began to breathe easier and began to move.
How do you feel on the verge of transition?
While the new role is still being formed, the most important thing is to regain your inner contact. Do not look for solutions immediately, but first create a space for honesty.
Take a short pause: switch off notifications, sit comfortably, take a few slow breaths. Allow yourself a few minutes where you don't have to be efficient - just present.
In this state, it is not advice that helps, but questions that reveal the truth. They work like a flashlight: they illuminate what is already ripe inside.
Questions for reflection
1. What in my current role no longer matches who I am becoming?
- What tasks or responsibilities are already pressing?
- Where am I acting on inertia rather than inner truth?
- What is no longer «mine» - and I'm afraid to admit it?
2. Where do I feel light and where do I feel resistance?
- When do I come alive?
- Where does the body contract - and what does this signal mean?
- If resistance is a message, what kind of message?
3. What part of me have I stopped expressing?
- Courage? Creativity? Depth? Calmness?
- What did I used to do naturally and stopped doing?
- What part of myself do I want to reconnect with?
4. What is it in me that wants to reach the next level?
- What desire comes back again and again?
- Which direction attracts you, even if it scares you?
- What could be the first small step in this direction?
5. What honest conclusion do I avoid making?
- What truth am I «putting off for later»?
- What am I afraid of in this conclusion - change, the reaction of others, responsibility?
- What would my action look like if I allowed myself to be honest?
After the practice
When the answers come, don't rush to change anything. Just read it again and ask yourself: «What needs my attention right now?» Sometimes it's enough to see one answer that you've been waiting for. It becomes the first step of a new stage.
If you feel that you are on the verge of transition, it is not about weakness. It's about growth.
Sometimes it is enough to see the truth honestly to understand the next step. If you want to talk about it, figure it out, or find a direction we are close by and open to conversation.
