{"id":4585,"date":"2026-02-26T18:26:54","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T16:26:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hr-power.group\/?p=4585"},"modified":"2026-02-26T18:26:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T16:26:57","slug":"%d1%8f%d0%ba-%d0%b0%d0%b4%d0%b0%d0%bf%d1%82%d1%83%d0%b2%d0%b0%d1%82%d0%b8%d1%81%d1%8f-%d0%b2-%d0%bd%d0%be%d0%b2%d1%96%d0%b9-%d0%b3%d1%80%d0%be%d0%bc%d0%b0%d0%b4%d1%96-%d1%82%d0%b0-%d0%ba%d1%80%d0%b0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hr-power.group\/en\/%d1%8f%d0%ba-%d0%b0%d0%b4%d0%b0%d0%bf%d1%82%d1%83%d0%b2%d0%b0%d1%82%d0%b8%d1%81%d1%8f-%d0%b2-%d0%bd%d0%be%d0%b2%d1%96%d0%b9-%d0%b3%d1%80%d0%be%d0%bc%d0%b0%d0%b4%d1%96-%d1%82%d0%b0-%d0%ba%d1%80%d0%b0\/","title":{"rendered":"How to adapt in a new community and country: psychological aspects of life after forced relocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The war that has been going on in Ukraine since 2014 has changed the lives of millions of people.<br>Thousands of Ukrainians have found themselves in new cities and countries - often without a vision of the future, resources or a sense of home.<br>Even if several years have passed, adaptation is an ongoing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not only about everyday life, but primarily about psychological and social recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens after a forced move<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a person leaves home because of war, they lose not only a place, but also part of their identity.<br>Everything is changing: language, culture, rhythm of life, even the sounds around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is often accompanied by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a sense of losing the ground under their feet;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Survivor's guilt (\u201cI'm safe, but someone is left behind\u201d);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fear of the future and uncertainty;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>social isolation, when it is difficult to find \u201cyour own\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>culture shock - even in friendly communities and countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These reactions are a normal response of the psyche to abnormal events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4 stages of adaptation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several stages of adaptation that most refugees and IDPs go through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The survival stage is the main task: to find accommodation and provide for basic needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stage of disorientation is the realisation of loss, emotional swing, sadness, and the feeling of \u201cI am a stranger\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stage of gradual acceptance - new habits, acquaintances, desire to learn and work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stage of integration is when a new place becomes a part of life, not a temporary refuge.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On average, the adaptation period lasts from 3 months to six months. But everyone goes through these stages at their own pace. The following psychological factors can be identified that affect the speed of adaptation:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ability to be open to new things<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexibility of the psyche<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level of self-knowledge - how well you know yourself and your reactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positive thinking<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;How to help yourself adapt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. 1. Give yourself the right to grieve<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have the right to be homesick, even if you have already made a new life. Grief allows you to process loss, to end a relationship with something or someone valuable, and to build acceptance of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2\ufe0f. Be patient with yourself<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psyche does not rebuild instantly. Sometimes the \u201cemotional winter\u201d lasts longer than expected - and that's normal. Help yourself - restore familiar rituals and habits, create a comfortable, cosy space, create a schedule that will help you take care of yourself and your loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3\ufe0f. Create a micro-environment of support<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look for people who understand you - Ukrainians, locals, volunteers, psychologists.<br>Even one person who listens without judgement can be a point of support - write down a list of people you can call for support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4\ufe0f. Keep in touch with the culture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ukrainian language, traditions, music, cuisine - all of this forms a sense of identity.<br>When we preserve what is ours, it becomes easier to accept what is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5\ufe0f. Allow yourself to learn new things<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new country is not only a challenge but also an opportunity.<br>Learning a language, participating in volunteer or professional initiatives gives you a sense of competence and control. Take note of what you like about the new place, create your own list of pleasant places and activities. Do not compare or contrast, but rather look for commonalities or simply emphasise the features<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">6\ufe0f. Take care of your mental health<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and insomnia are frequent companions of war.<br>Seeing a psychologist or support groups can help improve your condition and ease the stages of adaptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adaptation has its own peculiarities for children<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children often \u00abreact with behaviour\u00bb: they become anxious, irritable, or, on the contrary, \u201ctoo obedient\u201d.<br>They absorb their parents' emotions, so the best help is calm and predictable adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintain familiar rituals: a fairy tale, a joint dinner, photos from home, films or cartoons in Ukrainian.<br>This gives the child a signal: \u201cOur life goes on, we are together - and we are at home, even if we are far from home.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adaptation is not about \u201cforgetting the past\u201d, but about the ability to combine two worlds: the one that was and the one that is now.<br>This is the path from survival to recovery and a new quality of
