In the modern world, anxiety has become a part of many people's lives. Especially in times of war, uncertainty and constant stress, we begin to get used to the feeling of tension and stop noticing its manifestations. People often say: "I'm just tired", "It's because of work" or "Everyone lives like this" - although in reality, the symptoms are indicative of increased anxiety.
What signs can we ignore and overlook?
1. Constant tension in the body
Neck pain, shoulder pain, muscle stiffness, back problems or headaches are often attributed to physical activity or sedentary work. In fact, it can be the result of prolonged high levels of anxiety, when the body is constantly on "alert".
2. Problems with sleep
Difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently at night, or feeling exhausted even after 8 hours of sleep can be not only a sign of insomnia but also an anxiety signal. A brain that is constantly scrolling through thoughts does not allow the body to rest.
3. Gastrointestinal disorders
Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, or loss of appetite are often psychosomatic. Anxiety affects the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract through the interconnection of the nervous and digestive systems.
4. Excessive irritability
When even the smallest things cause irritation or anger, it may not be a "bad temper", but a sign that the nervous system is overloaded with anxiety.
5. Problems with concentration
It is difficult to concentrate on tasks, remember information, and finish what you have started - a common manifestation of anxiety. The brain is so busy "scanning for threats" that it lacks resources for cognitive activity.
6. Feeling of lack of air
Shortness of breath, shallow breathing or a feeling of a lump in the throat are often perceived as cardiopulmonary problems. However, it is often a symptom of anxiety that manifests itself through abnormal breathing patterns.
7. Avoidance of social situations
You start to refuse meetings, calls, or events more often, explaining that you are "tired" or "want to be alone". In fact, this can be a manifestation of social anxiety.
Why it is important not to ignore these symptoms
The feeling of anxiety is a natural response to a threat. Anxiety is part of the built-in survival system. When our brain notices a potential danger, it activates an "alarm signal" that prepares the body to act: the heart beats faster, breathing becomes more rapid, and muscles tense. This helps to react to threats faster (run away or defend yourself).
🔹 Why it is needed:
- Protection. An alarm warns us of a possible danger.
- Motivation. A moderate level of anxiety stimulates action (e.g., preparing for a speech or exam).
- Focus. It helps you focus on important tasks.
However, when it becomes permanent, it exhausts the nervous system, reduces the quality of life and can lead to psychosomatic and even cardiovascular diseases.
What to do:
- Listen to your body and emotions, notice recurring symptoms.
- Introduce basic self-regulation techniques: breathing exercises, physical activity, mindfulness practices.
- If symptoms last more than a few weeks or significantly interfere with life consult a psychologist or psychotherapist.
So, anxiety is not a "weakness" or a "character", but a signal from the body that it needs support. Noticing these symptoms in time means taking care of your health and preventing more serious problems.
